How to Edit a Story

I have the narrative kind of mapped in my head. I lay it out and then it's like whatever two hours worth of footage. And then there is that feeling too where I'm like, what am I gonna do with this? Yeah, there's a way, but I need to figure that out. But you see the finished timeline, but you do not know where to even start. So by literally cleaning up the timeline and having it on very basic post-it notes really helps me see the entire macro story.
