In eighteen ninety five, the typical person lived on a dollar a day in to day's dollars. And so there was every reason to be concerned about the disparity between rich and poor. The russians took one pathway, inspired by marks, and we took another pathway, inspired by john stuart mill and john locke and the english tradition of democracy. Those two systems turned into armed camps. But it was a hell of competition, and there were real differences in opinion at the bottom of it....
