The Scientific Method
The scientific method is an observation or a question where it starts. The assumption, as you said, maybe an early assumption into a research topic area. Then we test with experiment. We analyze that data and we report conclusions. I would say test with the experiment would also be where you would say someone that opposes that idea should step in and has some science say, I'd like to challenge you. Otherwise, it's an isolated result.
