The Age of Reason
John Locke is the first enlightenment thinker, together with John Locke, who is, I think, a little younger. He has a foot in both in the pre-enlightenment and in the enlightenment. But he is also the end of this era that starts with Francis Bacon, of science, of discovery, of communication. What you get here is religion being put to the side, a recognition of reason,. A recognition of the value of the individual... And now there's a philosophical defense, at least a weak one, but somewhat of individualism and a political defense of individualism.
