Western or the West?
The only actual connection, i would argue, among these various different uses of western or the west that we tend to link together is really just geographic. That we tend to use these terms to refer to ideas, practices, people that come from the western end of eurasia. All the various societies of urasia, europe, the middle east, india, china, japan, have always been very interconnected and have borrowed ideas and practices from one another. People did not see this, somehow, this dicotomy or sepa ation between east and west, until modern times.
