It wasn't common in New England tradition, but it has precedent in Europe, including Great Britain. There was a whole tradition of medicine where they would look for human body parts to use as medicine. Another name for a lot of that stuff is called medical cannibalism because they were in fact eating. Just in a sense that was going on in New England only in a different form.
