Determiners are often thought to code definiteness necessarily as part of their definition. But some people have made an argument there are some languages where that does not apply. My favorite is squamish, which has things that look like articles, but do not code familiarity to the speaker only. It just seems very strange to have an indication of the speaker knowing about something because it seems...I guess there are situations where you might want to make that distinction, but it's a little odd.
