The music genome project is this process where workers at pandora were tagging every single song in the data base with various tags. In fact, i would say the majority of recommender systems out there use collaborative filtering rather than content filtering users also liked instead of similar items. So it is linear regression. There are some very subtle differences you'll see when you take the andrew ing course, between linear regression and content filtering, but it's so minor.
