David Cameron's Referendum on Brexit
The messaging of the leave campaign in 2016 was faultless, says Alastair Campbell. Referendums should only be used when there is a fundamentally divisive issue over which politicians are agreed and the public are not, he adds. But Cameron had it for party political reasons,. internal reasons, not for the national interest - that's why we are where we are. He also said George Osborne desperately tried to persuade Cameron not to do it because he could see where it was heading.
