The Risk of Copper-Mediated Oxidative Stress

Free copper is capable of converting hydrogen peroxide to the much more dangerous hydroxyl radical, just like free iron. Just as with iron, the risk of that is largely when we lose our homeostatic control over putting copper into the right places at the right times. The only well-characterized syndrome of toxicity is Wilson's disease, which is a rare genetic defect in the ability to put that copper into the bile.
