Bonaparte's History

Bonaparte made the crossing to northern italy on a donkey. The french very nearly lost the battle, and that could have been right there for bonaparte. But at the end of the day, six thousand french reinforcements arrived and knocked out the exhausted austrians. A sease fire between the austrian and french armies facing each other along the rhine soon followed. Peace talks were well under way, culminating with the treaty of luneville in february 18 o one. This treaty was negotiated primarily by the consulate's foreign minister, tallyrand, and was settled, wouldn't you know it, on the basis of compo formio.
