The Thera Eruption in Crete
The Minoan civilization was a major power player throughout the Mediterranean world. This civilization was famous for its epic palaces, like the huge maze-like complex at Knoosos in Crete. The ancient classical Greeks had seen this ruin and made up their own stories about this labyrinth. And again, when you talk about the mythology of the labyrinth, you have this idea of this like beast living beneath the floor.
