The scale and aggression of the violence in Watts was unprecedented in modern America at least. The immediate response to Watts was to see it as a small group of street tufts in criminals. But post riot surveys showed that the rioters represented a cross section of black south central Los Angeles. What had happened for blacks of all classes was that the surge in collective consciousness flowing out of the southern civil rights struggle broke down barriers, writes historian Fred Siegel.
