When I wrote my first paper which contained a description of what we now call a universal quantum computers I had no idea I was inventing a universal quantum computer. The prevailing view of quantum theory namely wave function collapse and that sort of thing made the issue of testability very obscure. This is still a mystical concept well it's fortunately it's no longer a concept in physics it's not mystical.
