The way the surgery is done today is literally printed out images with target angles on them that are either brought up on a screen or on a literal piece of paper. And it's just an incredible math problem that's very hard for even the most brilliant surgeons to solve effectively. They print out each of these vertebrae, as you said, printing out a map, printing out your map quest as opposed to using GPS in your dashboard.
