The Three Possible Reasons Why We Talk Nonsense
Bentham thought that there are really only three possibilities here when you came across someone seemingly talking nonsense. He wanted to know whether the argument was an argument against utilitarianism or actually is an argument in the language of utility. Bentham suspected that a lot of what was going on with the law was just that, hiding behind the mask for benefit. But he's not alone in that later in the 19th century. There was to be a famous definition of the professions: They are all conspiracies against the public.
