The Lomami National Park

The Lomami National Park was created very much with the help of local chiefs. In the years leading up to the creation, a village known as Obagnie used to reside inside the borders of what is now Lomami. Dr. Hart said community members had already planned to leave the area and their departure initially didn't have anything to do with the creation of the park. However, when Mongebe spoke with Mod Salber of the Rainforest Foundation UK, she told us that communities left Obagnie in 2013 due to armed clashes,. Some returned but were forced out by the government in 2017.
