The Importance of Speaking Up

Villagers of Mashkul began saying that their 24 missing children had been taken to the English as ransom to free a French prisoner named Michel Desiès, a relative of Gilles de Ray. Only one woman dared say that the missing children might be taken up to Gilles deRay's house to be murdered. When those words were immediately reported to Gilles' people, the woman had to beg the pardon of the servants and the pardon of Gilles De Ray for fear of punishment. The only way these parents could stand justifying such actions was by saying that if their child went missing, then it was all money God punishing the parents for their sins.
