Espresso is about using pressure to speed up the brewing process. The very first espresso machines do contain steam ones, these were used primarily for actually warming cocktails rather than warming milk. And then of course once you have the espresso also changing nature and you add that and the now froth milk, you have this beverage cappuccino that can only be made on an espresso machine.
