In the early churches, widows had or could have a particular place that some men were less than thrilled about. Enhedo Anno was placed in a high priestess position by her father and probably wielded a significant amount of political power. And if you're not thinking about priestesses, there are almost like orders of nuns called the Nadi Two priestesses. These women lived aside from their families, they didn't have husbands,. They didn't have children. But it is interesting that women in particular latched on to the ascetic appeal in Christianity.
