The idea of a middle class at all is still kind of forming and the landed gentry are I wouldn't call them middle class I would probably call them like lower upper class. It means that you are not a noble technically but you do own a certain amount of land and you have inherited some well. The deal is basically you make enough off of the land that you own whether by like renting it out or whatever that you don't actually need to work. To do a work a day job. There's one sentence in this book that really that sums it up pretty well for me.
