The Origins of Classical Marxist Literary Criticism

The most prominent forms of Marxist literary criticism predating us looked really different than the kinds of conversations we were having with colleagues and students. In early 20th century focus primarily on working-class literature championing it arguing for its literary merit pushing back against negative representations of the working classes in classic literary texts. The production of surplus value opens doors towards other ways of thinking about what a text might be or disclose how it could be read alongside other texts so that was the shift in emphasis for us broadly speaking from away from a focus on class and ideology to focus on the question of value in capitalism.
