Pan All Sound

Pan rituals of ancient greece had an intimate connection to echo and noise making. Sound seems to have been an important factor in the determination of caves as the abodes of pan. To approach this god, the ritual protocol demanded noise. And so pan is a resonant sound that transports into a trance. The appropriate musical instruments for such a ritual performance were a blown instrument, a double flute or a syrinx,. accompanied by percussive sounds performed by idiophones such as rattles, or by the clapping of the audience.
