We have to consider again the reality of death in the 17th century. Even as late as the first part of the 19th century, there is this sense of death that hovers over childbirth both for the child and the mother. And so this is a pressing pastoral question. Every time that an infant dies or child dies, you can imagine the parents wondering because they want to know what has happened to my child. It's a pastoral concern.
