The Failure of Reconstruction
The failure of reconstruction meant the failure of the campaign for racial equality in the United States. It would have required something that was then anathema to the United States, a large standing army. The building of a large centralized federal state was itself controversial because this too was seen as contrary to the spirit of the American Revolution.
