Paul's Sufferings Aren't the Redemptive Sufficiencies of Christ, but the Tribulations of the New Creation
Paul believes that christians must enter into and participate in christ's sufferings as part of the passage into the new age of the resurrection. Paul isn't just one of many missionaries, he has some with an especial and unique calling in redemptive history. These tribulations are the birth pangs of the new creation. Christ has entered into this new creation ahead of us through the birth pang of the cross and the rebirth of the Resurrection. We follow in his footsteps.
