The Importance of Breakaway Bases

Roger Hall developed the first breakaway base in 1973. He spent about $100,000 of his own money while taxing the patience of his wife and daughter to get it right. Major League Baseball expressed skepticism in a 1992 Inquirer article. The American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society recommended that moveable bases be installed on every amateur field in America.
