The Morality of Art
One of the really important questions that's raised about art at the moment is can great art made by really bad people be acceptable? We think of people like Picasso, this relationship with women, his misogyny. Wagner, of course, is the classic case of the bad person who produces great art. And that comes to the idea, James, of morality. I think we might say that it's gone too far and we talk too much about the personalities behind art. But that conversation is still a clue to what is interesting in art to us, which is, yes, partly the art.
