Mollvad did a research on this and they published it for the world to see. They concluded that Android sends connectivity checks outside of the VPN tunnel. It does this every time the device connects to a Wi-Fi network, even when the block connections without VPN setting is enabled. Just so people know this isn't inherently a huge privacy and security risk. This is just kind of something that has to happen in order for the internet to work on mobile devices.
