Bergson's text is written in the middle of this sort of evolutionary theory wild west kind of moment where everything seems to be in doubt and so he's like writing at that time. The English translation incorporates a lot of those critical edition notes from the latest French edition which I assume would give you perhaps some more material and context to work with. It's also a really useful catalog of a under studied or sort of misrepresented time in terms of the history of the life sciences because it has an interesting use in that sense.
