Inflammation is a normal part of the body's response to foreign objects. Too much inflammation can be damaging and results in diseases like rheumatoid aphritis or inflammatory bowel disease. Each year, thousands of people die from sepsis, characterized by out of control inflammation. Electro acupuncture delivers electricity through electrodes placed in the body's tissues. Relatively low currents are applied to the nerve, which causes nerves in the area of the electrode to become stimulated in fire. Could we stop inflammation by high jacking some neuronts, getting them to fire when we want?

In mice, electroacupuncture has been shown to reduce inflammation, but only when certain points on the body are stimulated. Why this is has puzzled scientists, but now, researchers have identified the specific neurons that are involved. They hope that this knowledge could be used in future to help treat certain inflammatory-related diseases.
