The Importance of Repeat Play in Democracy

The only election that I think anybody can seriously contest was the second election of Ugo Chavez, where there may have been some manipulation. But otherwise, these are elections that are held under imperfect conditions. Under those circumstances, there is a democratic legitimacy to their governance and so one can't take that away from them. We saw that with Bolsonaro in Brazil, we saw that with Kijinsky and Orban in Eastern Europe. And we see it now in vivid form in Mexico with Lopez Obrador's attempt to disable the two independent bodies that have overseen real democratic governance.
