The 19th century and early 20th centuries were the great era of Freemasonry, particularly in the United States. Why was the US drawn to Freemasonry so much then? What was the appeal there? It's always been about religious tolerance, at least in its core values. You get Jews in Masonic lodges in 18th century London. You even get Catholics, people of all social stations. So there was this element of religious tolerance, which perfectly suited the American case where religious freedom was part of the constitution.
