The goal of riding the bull is to hang on to the bucking animal for at least eight seconds and as Russell Martin I think very astutely points out that eight second ride which provides the sort of culminating moment of the rodeo it is a metaphor for the taming of the west itself. The cowboy in film is not just straight forwardly a civilizer in other words he's understood to have multiple sides sometimes within one personality or sometimes split among different figures.
