Origins of Crime in Ukraine: Street Gangs, Organized Crime, and the Soviet-Cheddar Economy

This chapter explores the origins of crime in Ukraine, focusing on the increase in street gangs during and after WWII, the crackdown on organized crime in Odessa, and the emergence of the Soviet-Cheddar economy as a response to the Soviet Union's shortcomings. It also discusses the four stages in the relationship between the state and the criminal world, with a focus on the confrontational stage and the stage of passive assimilation.
