The Pious Emotions That Fall on a Viral Heart Are No Better Than Spiritual Mushrooms
Saul did not cease to persecute David as cruelly as before. Despite all this apparent devotion, these poor souls will not part with the slightest penny of the ill-gotten riches they possess. The pious emotions that they express were no better than spiritual mushrooms. These are the friendships of little children, tender indeed, but weak, capricious, and without results. This relish for the things of God is what made David cry out in 1 Samuel 24.
