Is There a Process of Separation?

A friend of mine has a child, and he was telling me about how it was in the first couple of years that they had their son. He described the process of their son maturing and eventually going off and doing his own thing as a natural extension of that. They provided for him up until the point where he decided he didn't want to do that anymore. And I think that was also the case with the breastfeeding. It's like an idea that I've been just kind of messing around with. I don't know if it's a good one or not.
