The Burkenhead Drill Set a Standard
The loss of burkenhead and the way in which the men had behaved was never forgotten. The story, or version of the story, was put up in every barracks of every regiment. There was this expectation that they would stand straight backed and let the women and children go. Captain edward smith, the captain of the titanic, was heard constantly saying to his officers, be british boys. Be british. Some of them dead, you know. Others were crumpled by the pressure.
