Augusta Savage grew up in a deeply religious family in Florida. When her father saw her sculpting animals from the red clay she found near their home, he punished her for creating false idols. Her friends described her as an indomitable force. She married it, I think age 15, and had a child, her only child, Irene, at 16. But even as a young mother, she stoked the flames of her desire to be an artist.
