The Problem With Archaeological Cultures
Archaeologists usually divide objects and patterns of settlement or housing into what are called archaeological cultures. The problem with this is that archaeological cultures aren't real, they're abstractions - a long way removed from lived reality. Archaeologists know the shortcomings of trying to use archaeological cultures like this. They are rightly suspicious of using them uncritically.
