In his book, Olafemi argues that elite capture occurs throughout society. To understand how identity politics are warped or co-opted through elite capture, we need to talk about what Olafemi calls deference politics. In the absence of the right kind of checks or constraints, the subgroup of people with power over and access to the resources used to describe, define, and create political realities will capture the group's values.
