The Importance of Identity Politics in Health Care

The idea that it's possible to have an identity that requires medicalization is completely novel to the trend of the 21st century. We're talking about people who might be starting off physically healthy and capable but are actively choosing on the basis of their sense of identity, perhaps having surgeries that have a negative impact on their health. And then those present additional health care burdens in a system where everything has to be super efficient and people really need to be up to the task. "It seems like one of them many complicated ramifications of mixing up identity politics with health care," she says.
