There's a fun book called the hypomanic edge, why america is the way it is. The author essentially advances the thesis that the very nature of your average American is different than that of europeans. And also, i would add to that, they had a long tradition in europe, and really everywhere asia, of the state being the godhead, so to speak. But who knows? With that kind of level of unemployment, you might get people saying, i just can't take this any more.
