The liberation of Mazari Sharif in the first two weeks of November in 2001 was not something we were really planning for. The people lining the streets, cheering and smiling, some of them had shaved off their beard the day before. Several of them compared it to the liberation of Europe in 1945, of being greeted by like liberators and heroes.
