The Emerald Ash Borer
In the early 1990s, a cargo ship arrived in Detroit carrying pallets made of unprocessed ashwood from east Asia. Along for the ride were several emerald beetles, half an inch long. The beetles emerged into the world with an inherited recognition of the ash trees' chemical scent. No one could figure out what was killing all of the ash.
