In 1907, there was a financial crisis on Wall Street. And when that happened, the American economy went plummeting into what we would call a depression. By the time that panic reached its peak in late 1907, early 1908, the unemployment rate in the United States was 20%. There were literally thousands of children in the poorest sections of New York City who weren't getting enough to eat.
