The king of the scots, constantine, broke his treaty with athelstan in nine 34. He may have simply refused to pay the required tribute to athelstan. Northern britain wasn't unified under scottish rule yet. There was a distinct scottish kingdom, but there were also cumbr and strathclyde. The leaders of those respective kingdoms began to realize that their only chance against athelstan was as a unified force. And they sought to bring york into that alliance.
