The Leveling Down Objection to Inequality

It strikes me as absurd to believe that if there were people in Britain who are much wealthier than people the other side of the planet, that the world is somehow a better place by making people in Britain worse off. That would be an implication of a view that inequality is intrinsically bad even when people have no relationship with each other. No egalitarian thinks that it's all things considered a good thing to level down because no one thinks that only equality matters. Everyone thinks how well people are doing in absolute terms and maybe inequality matter.
