The Battle of Harper's Ferry
In many circles in the north, John Brown became a martyr. People doubled down on their efforts to abolish the institution. In the south, people were terrified. The idea that these people might unite and violently overthrow their owners was petrifying. It was also one of many events that happened in the late 1850s that stoked political passions over the issue of slavery.
