Thomas Metzinger developed a theory of how our brains construct a model of self, which is intimately tied to a model of physical space. He wanted to see if he could get participants to project their sense of self into avatars that were offset from their location by just a few apparent feet. In meditation there's still an elementary sense of selfhood that we call this body sitting in front of us.
